This part is going to focus on approaching schools.
When approaching schools for subbing I have been advised by a number of principals that face to face is the best approach. Many principals like to be able to put a face with the name.
Dress smartly - first impressions count. Dress as you would for a job interview. This is how many principals view subs leaving in CVs. It is an opportunity to speak with the substitute teacher and suss them out. I thought it would be a simple case of hand in CV and leave. This is not the case. The majority of administrative principals brought me into the office for a 'chat'. During the chat I was asked everything from where I lived to what my favourite subjects were to teach, and why. I was asked about my experience, have I visited many schools with my CV and if I was probated. Many principals went through my CV and commented on different aspects of it.
Don't assume that a teaching principal will be any less thorough. Many teaching principals are only delighted to take the time out of teaching to speak with a perspective sub. They will also go through your CV and question aspects of it.
Don't assume that a teaching principal will be willing to meet you. If a principal is teaching and there is a secretary don't ask to speak to the principal - they may not like to be interrupted. If a secretary asks if you would like to speak with the principal that is a different story and feel free to meet the principal in that case.
Be polite. As I already said first impressions count and they way you act with the first staff members you meet will make an impression on the entire staff - you will be discussed in the staffroom when you leave. Smile and be polite at all times.
Don't wander the corridors. Child protection policies mean that you can no longer get in the door of many schools without using a buzzer or intercom. That said if the door is open either follow the signs for the office or knock the first classroom door and ask to be directed.
What should you bring?
Your CV is the obvious answer but also include a copy of Garda Vetting, TC registration and Statutory Declaration. These are all items that schools will require if you actually sub in the school.
Visit as many schools as possible and show that you are willing to travel to the school. Schools are more likely to take your CV more seriously this way.
Best of luck subbing everyone :)
